FDM & fascia

What is the Fascial Distortion Model?

FDM was developed from 1991 onwards by the American physician and osteopath Stephen Typaldos. He asked why the usual approaches, such as immobilisation, medication, bandages or exercise programmes, often fail to help people with acute or persistent pain. His investigations focused on a structure that medicine had long neglected: the connective tissue, the fascia.

FDM is a medical model in which complaints and pain are traced back to deformations or twists, called distortions, of the connective tissue. Careful observation of patients and specific manual techniques, the Typaldos method, produced one of the most effective treatment methods we currently know: the Fascial Distortion Model.

„The pain you express determines the treatment, because nobody knows your body better than you!“

The pain gesture

People show their pain before they describe it. A finger drawing a line. A hand wrapped around a joint. A thumb pressing on one spot. In FDM this gesture is not a detail, it is the finding. It shows which deformation of the connective tissue is present and which technique applies.

Trigger band TB

A twisted band within the connective tissue. The pain burns along a line.

Pain gesture
The finger strokes along a line.
Treatment
Thumb pressure along the band, in the direction of pull.

What you should know

  • Treatment can be uncomfortable while it is being applied.
  • Temporary bruising or tenderness in the treated area is possible. This can indicate that fascial adhesions are being released. In individual cases the techniques are applied firmly and directly on the painful tissue.
  • Please mention beforehand if you take blood-thinning medication, have osteoporosis or a fresh injury, or if you are pregnant.
